"Imperial troops have entered the base! Imperial troops have entered—"
Continuing from my previous post with Lord Vader I have painted up four units thats 28 models of snow troopers to complete the army. This post will detail some history of the troopers follow by a painting write up.
Cold assault stormtroopers, also known more simply as snowtroopers, were Imperial stormtroopers trained to operate in arctic climates. Some snowtroopers were deployed under Death Squadron's Blizzard Force, as well as other arctic forces.
They are the successors of the clone cold assault troopers and the Galactic Marines under Clone Commanders Kellerand Bacara, respectively, during the Clone Wars.
Snowtroopers were utilised on many different icy worlds, including the Imperial garrison on the planet Akuria II. Their most notable conquest was at the Battle of Hoth, where the Imperial Blizzard Force defeated the forces of the Alliance to Restore the Republic and overran Echo Base.
Their helmets had built-in polarised snow goggles and breastplate worn by them was constructed of a plastoid composite armor. Near the center were all of the controls for the completely self-sufficient troopers' life-support systems. These included an external temperature monitor, power cell monitor, and the controls for the suit's heater. The troopers' backpacks housed the main heating unit, main power cell, communications unit, and a homing beacon. The pack also had the ability to work as a power source for other equipment.
Snowtroopers could survive up to two weeks in even the harshest frozen environments on their internal suit power and supplies. This makes them the real world equivalent of Harsh environment commandos or spetznaz.
With the troopers being primarily white I wanted to break this up somewhat with some weathering to show they have been trudging through the dirty snow and slush. With this in mind I googled reference images of winter commandos and came up with several showing the the look i was trying to achieve.
I began the painting using an airbrush grey primer, followed by some progressively lighter shades of stone grey on the cloth material, and grey with gradually adding more white to the armour.
I then added an all over oil wash with a mix of brown and black paints and used some thinners and a clean brush for clean up.
I continued painting the guns and lenses with Solid black, and edge highlighted them with grey followed by lighter grey in selected areas.
I then used progressively lighter shades of of thinned white on the armour helmet and faces.
For additional colour I painted various buttons and the panels on the back with blue and various buttons with blue and red acrylics.
This was then followed up with a combination of dry weathering pigments using a soft brush to add the grime.
For the bases is started out with blue/grey paint followed by a mixture of white glue, white paint, plaster dust and Galeforce 9 snow. This was then pasted onto the bases. I finished them off by dry bushing some of the snow with pure white, and the rim with a flat black.
This was then sealed with Ak pigment fixer followed by two coats of matt varnish.
Acrylic paints used are from Reaper Miniatures, and Oils from Windsor and Newton.
